Open Kitchen Remodel

There’s nothing more exciting for us than the chance to work on a full-home remodel. Unless it’s a previous client saying they want to remodel again! So we were thrilled when Karen called us and said she wanted an open kitchen.

The Previous Remodel

After purchasing their home, Karen and her family worked with Merrick Design and Build to expand their home with a rear addition in 2005. The addition added a much-needed mudroom, extra square footage to their family room, and created an eating nook with banquet seating, a desk area, and lots of storage. Additionally, it featured lots of windows and multiple ceiling height details for architectural interest.

After enjoying their new space over the past 9 years, the family was able to come up with a few changes to create an even greater space for their needs. They had a list of things to add: an open kitchen with more storage, a large breakfast bar for the whole family, and a few extras like bookshelves and a beverage refrigerator.

The Open Kitchen Remodel

To create that open kitchen, we had to take down the wall between the kitchen and existing banquet seating. This wall was an exterior wall and load-bearing. Supporting the 2nd story while creating an open floor plan required columns and beams. We took lemons and made lemonade by turning them into architectural features. We added a few more beam and column details to unify the room and accentuate the vaulted ceilings.

With all this new space, we customized their storage needs with extra cabinets, spice drawers, and cubes. Also, we modified small end spaces with hidden storage. Now everything has a home. The cabinets are a rich, warm wood to contrast the white beams and columns. The oversized island is perfect for the natural movement of the gorgeous granite countertops. Tiffany style pendants illuminate the island, while arts and crafts decorative tiles draw attention to the chimney hood and glass backsplash. All of this complements the home’s design style. The addition of an open kitchen created a warm and inviting room that is large and airy enough for every type of family gathering.
