Kensington, MD , Kitchen Remodel - $75,000
Kathy’s kitchen didn’t feel much like the heart of her home. This split level home was tight and closed off. Kathy needed better sightlines to watch her three kids for her peace of mind. She wanted both style and more importantly function.
Merrick blew out the walls on the middle floor of her split level home between the kitchen and living room. This opened up the living spaces into one large great room that everyone in Kathy’s family can enjoy. The large island can seat Kathy’s entire family and has two tiers of seating to accommodate family members of all ages.
The space has plenty of storage with a large floor to ceiling pantry cabinet and extends 42″ high wall cabinets. The 4 skylights in the new cathedral ceiling make the great room feel spacious and even large than it already is. The bay window over the sink brings in even more light and allows Kathy to watch her children as they play in the backyard. The window comes all the way down to counter level which creates a bit of a dilemma. Building code requires an outlet for every two feet of counter space, so a pop-up outlet was used in front of the bay window to keep things neat while still sticking to code. Extra design elements such as the industrial lights from Restoration Hardware give the space some added personality.
