Carpenter

Position Overview

The Carpenter will supervise apprentice carpenters, vendors, and sub-contractors in the absence of the Lead Carpenter. Carpenters are responsible for reading plans and preforming carpentry task to MDBI quality. General tasks include, but are not limited to, demo, framing, window, cabinets, and trim, according to the schedule set by the PM.

Work Experience Requirements

2 years of hands-on residential construction work.

Educational Requirements

High School, some college or trade school is desirable.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Rough carpentry experience and knowledge.
  • Finish carpentry experience and knowledge including trim, cabinetry installation, and interior finishes.
  • Fluent English
  • Plan reading

  • In the absence of the Lead Carpenter, use Buildertrend daily logs to record progress and project milestones.

Duties & Responsibilities

Carpentry Tasks

  • Set up and maintain dust and existing surface protection.
  • Safely and efficiently assist with demolition.
  • Assist with the construction, structural modifications, additions, and exterior structures from plans. Compensating for existing conditions to complete plumb and level framing.
  • Set windows and exterior doors to manufacturers specifications.
  • Assist with running duct work if project is too small for a sub.
  • May be expected to install small amounts of batt insulation, if project is too small for a sub.
  • Apply air seal and fire stop.
  • Small drywall repairs.
  • Assist with the installation of cabinetry.
  • Assist with the installation of appliances per manufactures specifications.
  • Assist with the installation of interior doors and trim at a high-quality level.
  • Install bathroom and kitchen accessories using jigs, preset blocking of proper wall anchors if called for.
  • Assist with the installation of prefinished flooring to manufactures specifications.
  • Some paint touch ups.
  • Assist with the installation of exterior decking, rails, pergolas and other features as called for on plans and/or to manufactures specifications.

General Tasks

  • Meet with inspectors in the absence of the Lead Carpenter.
  • Review and follow the OSHA Job Safety Report provided by the PM
  • Minimize our exposure to risk on projects.

Maintain Merrick Quality Standards

  • Dress appropriately in a clean Merrick shirt in pants free of rips.
  • Maintain clean and safe jobsites with out being prompted.
  • Ensure clients property is well protected through the course of a project.

Client Communication

  • Politely greet clients when they are on sight.
  • Redirect specific questions to the Lead Carpenter or PM.
  • Redirect Change Order Requests to the PM.

Meetings

  • Participate in Job Start Meeting.
  • Attend all company update meetings.
  • Participate in educational demonstrations.

Company Policies

Adhere to and maintain the following company policies among the production team:

  • Alcohol or Illegal Drugs. Absolutely no alcohol or illegal drugs may be used on the job or anywhere near the jobsite, even outside working hours. Such use of alcohol or illegal drugs will result in immediate dismissal.
  • Tobacco products are not allowed on job sites or company vehicles.
  • All employees must be vaccinated for Covid-19

Measurement of Performance

  • Attendance log.
  • Minimal overtime.

  • Participation in educational events.

Salary

Based on experience and skill level.

Work Hours

  • Standard work hours are 7-4

Evaluation Requirements

An annual review will be conducted as a discussion with the President.

The evaluation will consist of a review of the job descriptions for each team member and an evaluation of how well each member of the team is meeting those requirements.

Attention will be given to areas of weakness and how the job descriptions can be adjusted to accommodate those areas without compromising the overall mission of this position.

Chain of Command

  • This position reports directly Lead Carpenter. In their absence they report to the PM.
