Home Services Technician

Position Overview

The Home Services technician will take assigned projects from Job set up to completion, including supervising the on-sight team carpenters, apprentice carpenters, vendors, and sub-contractors. They are directly responsible for completing in-house construction tasks such as demo, framing, window, cabinets, and trim, according to the schedule set by the PM. It is expected that the Home Services technician will play an active role in the education of Carpenters and Apprentice Carpenters.

Work Experience Requirements

5 years of hands-on residential construction work.

Educational Requirements

High School, some college, or trade school is desirable.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Extensive finish carpentry experience and knowledge including trim, cabinetry installation, and interior finishes.
  • High-quality drywall, and painting skills.
  • Good working knowledge of all related building trades. The ability to replace plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • The ability to teach others.
  • Fluent English
  • Fluent Spanish

Duties & Responsibilities

Carpentry Tasks

  • Oversee the setup and maintenance of dust and existing surface protection.
  • Safely and efficiently complete demolition.
  • Plan for proper blocking for cabinets, accessories, and mirrors.
  • Set windows and exterior doors to manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Replace light fixtures, switches, and outlets
  • Replace plumbing fixtures.
  • Run duct work if project is too small for a sub.
  • May be expected to install small amounts of batt insulation, if project is too small for a sub.
  • Perform or oversee the correct application of Air seal and fire stop.
  • Drywall repairs.
  • Plan for and set level cabinets scribing to the walls in floors to MDBI standards. (NO SCRIBE MODELING)
  • Install appliances per manufactures specifications.
  • Install interior doors and trim at a high-quality level.
  • Build high-quality built-ins and millwork details.
  • Install bathroom and kitchen accessories using jigs, and preset blocking of proper wall anchors if called for.
  • Install prefinished flooring to manufactures specifications.
  • Painting
  • Install exterior decking, rails, pergolas, and other features as called for on plans and/or to manufactures specifications.
  • Other tasks may be requested based on your personal skill set.

Managerial Tasks

  • Meet with inspectors. Asking insightful questions when needed to help advance in the case of a failed inspection.
  • Provide planning assistance to trade contractors. Overseeing that utility holes in drywall and framing are efficient and to code.
  • Oversee the correct installation of tile work.
  • Oversee countertop measure.
  • Minimize our exposure to risk on projects.
  • Manage in-house team to meet or exceed the project schedule written by the PM.
  • Work with the PM to place material orders. Providing lumber and trim take-offs, measuring RO for doors and windows, etc.

Maintain Merrick Quality Standards

  • Dress appropriately in a clean Merrick shirt in pants free of rips.
  • Oversee clean and safe job sites
  • Ensure the client’s property is well protected through the course of a project.
  • Complete quality checks throughout the project to ensure the highest quality finish.

Maintain regular communication with clients

  • Politely greet clients when they are on sight. Walking them through the project and answering any questions as precisely as possible, redirecting them to the PM or designer as necessary.
  • Redirect Change Order Requests to the PM.

Meetings

  • Participate in Job-related meetings
  • Attend all company update meetings.
  • Help in the planning and execution of educational demonstrations.

  • Alcohol or Illegal Drugs. Absolutely no alcohol or illegal drugs may be used on the job or anywhere near the job site, even outside working hours. Such use of alcohol or illegal drugs will result in immediate dismissal.
  • Tobacco products are not allowed on job sites or company vehicles.
  • All employees must be vaccinated for Covid-19

Measurement of Performance

  • All projects are to be brought in on time according to the project schedule developed within the variance of 5%; with the exception of approved client change orders, project change orders approved by the president or other exceptions approved by the president.

Salary

Based on experience and skill level.

Work Hours

  • Standard work hours are 7-4
  • Must be available for flexible work hours if required and be available after hours should emergencies arise during projects.

Evaluation Requirements

An annual review will be conducted as a discussion with the President. The evaluation will consist of a review of the job descriptions for each team member and an evaluation of how well each team member is meeting those requirements. Attention will be given to areas of weakness and how the job descriptions can be adjusted to accommodate those areas without compromising the overall mission of this position.

Chain of Command

  • This position reports directly to the Production Manager.
  • Carpenters and apprentice carpenters answer to the Lead Carpenter on site.
